Let the base of the triangle=X cm then altitude of the triangle=(x-7)

hypotenuse=13cm

By the Pythagorean theorem

(hypotenuse )2.=(Base)2+(altitude)2

(13)2=(x)2+(x-7)2

169=(x)2+(X)2-14x+49

or

2x2-14x-20=0

x2-7x-60=0

(x-12) (x+5)

X=12 or x=5

length can not be negative hence we choose x=12cm

altitude=x-7=12-7=5cm
