Amino acid exists in zwitter ionic form(a German word). Which means, it has both acidic and basic radicals. Therefore, it can add H+ ions to the solution by combining with OH- part of the water molecule or it can react with H+ radicals and release free OH- radicals in water thus, protonating and deprotonating water molecules.

Amino acids can also be said to be Amphoteric in nature, due to this behaviour.
