When nessler's reagent (potassium tetraiodomercurate) in alkaline medium (KOH or NaOH) is passed through ammonia solution (ammonium hydroxide), it gives a reddish brown precipitate

The reaction is:

2 K2HgI4 + NH3 + 3 KOH →

NH2—Hg —O —Hg —I + 7KI + 2 H2O
