Answer:

An agricultural land is said to be water logged when there is insufficient oxygen in the pore spaces for plant roots to be able to respire adequately.

Explanation:

Water logging causes accumulation of other harmful gases such as CO2, and ethylene in the root zone and affect the plant growth.

Plants have variable demand for oxygen to grow. Oxygen deficiency in the root zone of the plants causes decomposition of their root tissues usually at root tips. Prolonged water logging may result to death of the plants.

During water logging situation soil profile or root zone of the plants become water saturated when more rain falls more than the soil absorption capability. Nitrogen is lost from water logged soils due to leaching and degassing/denitrification which leads to loss of nitrous oxide gas (a greenhouse gas) into the atmosphere.

Water logging also significantly reduces the nitrogen fixing ability of the root nodules in legumes.

Water logging can result into huge economic loss in agriculture due to its detrimental effects on growth and yield of crop plants.
