An application of rational functions may involve the number of persons who can do a task in a certain amount of time.we can handle these applications involving work in a manner similar to the method we used to solve distance speed and time problems.work =rate X time.suppose you can finish a report in 12 hours.your classmate can finish the same report in 4 hours.how long will it take to finish the report if both of you work together.we have a saying that two heads are better than one would you rather work alone or with a team why

The answer is 3 hours

Given,

I can finish the report =  12 hours

My friend can finish the report = 4 hours

To Find,

Time taken to finish the same report with me and my friend working together =?

Solution,

I can finish the report =  12 hours

Work done in 1 hour by me = 1 / 12

Similarly, work done by my friend in 1 hour = 1 / 4

Work done by us in 1 hours = (1 / 4) + (1 / 12)

Work done by us in 1 hours = (3 + 1 )/12

Work done by us in 1 hours = 4 / 12

Work done by us in 1 hours =  1 / 3

Time taken to complete the report by me and friend together = 1 /(3 / 1) = 3 hours

Hence, the time taken to finish the report if both of us work together is  3 hours. I would work with a team rather than work alone as it will take less time to complete the work.
