Given:

An iron pipe of length 5* 1/ 3  m long was cut into two pieces.

One piece is 3 *1/7  m  long

To find:

What is the length of the other piece?

Solution:

The length of the iron pipe = 5\frac{1}{3}\: m = \frac{16}{3} \:m

The length of one of the pieces cut from the iron pipe = 3\frac{1}{7} \:m = \frac{22}{7} \:m

Therefore,

The length of the other piece is,

= [Length of the iron piece] - [Length of one of the piece]

= \frac{16}{3} - \frac{22}{7}

taking L.C.M of the denominators i.e., L.C.M of 3 & 7 is 21

= \frac{(16\times 7)\:-\:(22\times 3)}{21}

= \frac{112\:-\:66}{21}

= \frac{46}{21}

converting into mixed fractions

= \bold{2\frac{4}{21} \:m}

Thus, the length of the other piece of the iron pipe is\underline{\bold{2\frac{4}{21} \:m}}.
