A real time operating system is an os where computer needs to respond instantly within the given deadline which may be either hard or soft...
if the deadline is hard then the system will fail to respond once the deadline is achieved bt the task has not yet been completely executed and it's utility value will turn to be zero at the same instant of time.
if the deadline is soft then the system will not fail instantly, will complete the execution of the ongoing task but will lead into the decreased service quality and so the value of the utility factor will turn zero in a gradual manner.
hope this helps you...
