Answer:
KOLKATA: The video of a man replacing a ‘Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana’ poster with a ‘Bangla Gram Sadak Yojana’ one in West Bengal went viral a few days ago.
Senior BJP leaders, including central ministers, called this an instance of Trinamool Congress' attempt to steal credit. But TMC's social media wing claimed it was a "fake video and news" to defame the party. It also claimed that those responsible for the video were arrested following a complaint submitted to the cyber cell of state police.
Even as the controversy rages on fake news, political parties in the state such as TMC, CPM and Congress are investing heavily to set up teams that fact-check and counter fake news on social media. TMC has assigned specially trained people to fact-check info graphics, videos and articles related to economic issues.
“The social media unit of the party has now formed a special wing of 20 people in Kolkata and 20 in Delhi who are assigned to deal with fake videos, infographics, misleading economic parameters and other posts that can potentially influence or misinform people,” said a senior member of TMC's social media wing. "These fact-check teams consist of young professionals from Indian Statistical Institute, IIM, IIT and other universities. They will work for us for the next seven to eight months till the elections get over.”
A Congress leader heading the social media wing in the state said while the party has a national set-up in Delhi, small teams work round-the-clock in every state to detect fake news. “There are youth Congress members who volunteer to work in such teams,” he said. CPM MP Mohammad Salim said his party organises workshop and involves college and university students for media watch and fact-check.
