let age of son = s yrs.

age of father = f yrs.

at present , s + f = 54.

s = 54 - f

two yrs ago , age of son = s-2 yrs

age of father = f-2 yrs

so , (s-2)×(f-2) = 400

put value of s in this equation

(54 - f -2) × (f-2) = 400

52f -f^2 -104 +2f = 400

f^2 - 54f + 504 = 0

f^2 - 12f - 42f + 504 =0

f(f-12) - 42(f-12) =0

( f-12) × (f-42) = 0

so , f= 12 & f=42

as s =54 - f = 54 -42 = 12 {age of father can't be less than age of son , so we take f = 42 }

age of father = 42 yr

age of son = 12 yr
