Let the total students = x

number of girls = 4x/9

boys = x - 4x/9

= ( 9x - 4x ) /9

= 5x / 9

according to the problem given ,

5x/9 - 4x/9 = 17

( 5x - 4x ) /9 = 17

x /9 = 17

x = 9 × 17

x = 153

Total students = x = 153
