Clayey soil is good for this purpose because it does not allow water to pass through it.. so it can be helpful.

Loam Soil is best. A combination of sand, silt, and clay particles, this soil absorbs water readily and is able to store it for use by plants. Loamabsorbs water at a rate between 1/4 and 2 inches per hour. I think this can be the answer you are looking for..thanks
