The term infodemic was coined in 2003 in relation to the flood of information accompanying the SARS outbreak. It is of course a blend of information and epidemic. The word epidemic dates back to the early 17th century, first appearing as an adjective; the noun arrived about a hundred years later. It is derived from a combination of Greek epi (= ‘upon’) and demos (= ‘the people’). Correspondingly, the more serious pandemic is derived from Greek pan meaning ‘all’, i.e. ‘affecting everyone’, a word now firmly in the public radar.
