we need to find the roots of x^2 -3x-1
on applying quadratic formula
D = b^2-4ac
D= (-3) ^2 - 4(1)(-1)
D = 9 + 4
D = 13
root D = root 13

X = -b _+ root D/2a
X = - (-3) +root 13 /2 , -(-3 )- root 13/2
X = 3+ root 13 /2, 3 - root 13/2
hope it helps you.
