\Large\bold\star\underline{\underline\textbf{Eddy currents\:}}

→ Eddy currents are the circulating currents which are produced in a conductor when the magnetic flux linked with the conductor changes.

→ This current leads to the heating of the conductor and hence energy is lost.

1). Dead beat Galvanometer

When a current is passed through the coil of a galvanometer, it is deflected. The coil oscillates about its equilibrium position for some time before coming to rest. In order to stop the vibrations of the coil, it is wound on a metallic frame. The coil rotates when current is passed through it. The rotation changes the magnetic flux linked with the frame. It produces eddy currents in frame which retards the motion of coil. So, coil comes to rest in shorter interval.

2). Electromagnetic brakes

Eddy currents are used in controlling the speed af electric trains. A strong magnetic field is appilied to a metallic drum rotating with axle connecting the wheels. Due to this, large eddy currents set up in the rotating drum which opposes the motion of the drum and tends to stop the train.

3). Induction furnace.

4). Induction motor.

5). In speedometers of automobiles and energy meters.
