During the rule of the Cholas in the third century BC, direct trade existed between South Indian kingdoms and countries in the Middle East, Egypt and China. This is evident from the several archaeological records, of those time. 
 
Horses were imported to the port of Kaveripoompattinam (now known as Poompuhar, in Tamil Nadu) from Arabia. Spices were a favourite commodity for export from this port. Records of shipyards are also found in archaeological manuscripts.
