Legal cultivation of opium for medicinal purposes is carried out in India, only in selected areas, under free licensing conditions. Legal cultivation for medical use is permissible within the ambit of United Nations, Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs 1961.

Yes opium and indigo still grow in india but we need a license now ..... the cultivation of these two crops harmed indian peasants during the colonial period because they were forced to grow the crops by the britishers and by just growing these crops only once , the whole field would turn infertile
