Plastic Pollution And How To Tackle It

This expression beautifully explains that though plastic is quite useful, yet it causes pollution everywhere. Let’s see how it pollutes our environment. Plastics have become almost an integral part of each and every human being’s life on the planet. There is no company, manufacturer, seller that does not use plastic. Plastics have become ubiquitous. The consumption of plastics worldwide will stagger you! According to oceancrusaders.org shoppers worldwide are using approximately 500 billion single-use plastic bags per year.

This means about a million bags every minute across the globe or 150 bags a year for every person on earth. The problem with most of the plastics is their toxicity, strength, and the ability to last long in all types of weather or climate conditions.

These qualities of plastic make it a deadly material which poses threat to environment. According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, plastic debris kills an estimated 100,000 marine mammals annually, as well as millions of birds and fishes.

The need of the hour is to replace plastic with environmental friendly materials. All of us need to join our hands to fight this menace and preserve our beautiful environment. We must stop using plastic altogether. The governments of various nations, including our national Government have launched anti-plastic campaigns. We can make these campaigns by saying ‘NO TO PLASTIC’.

Apart from saying no to plastics, the Government needs to install high-tech plastic waste treatment plants where plastic waste is treated in the most efficient manner.

One of the main reasons for the deteriorating conditions of the world is the pollution which takes place as carbon prints increase overtime. From the various forms of pollution plastic pollution is one of the common kinds which leads to adverse effects on the wildlife, human life, and habitats as well.

Plastics are components which act as pollutants entering into the various forms of environment, solid, liquid and gas, all forms. Due to the nature of plastic being cheap, durable and easily accessible, they result in high level of its consumption and production.

In addition, such pollutants take time to degrade due to the chemicals present in them. Thus, they degrade slowly. Plastic pollution may afflict land, air and sea. Humans are also affected by plastic pollution, such as through disruption of various hormonal mechanisms.

Recently, there are certain chemical recycling methods which require lower energy, have compatibility of mixed plastic wastes to avoid the need for sorting and have possess traits of expanding recycling technologies to traditionally non-recyclable items. These methods are the latest which are used as of now to ensure that recycling takes place.

However, plastic recycling doesn't take place on a domestic level because people still don't see this as an issue. Its important to create awareness and sanctions regarding the consumption of plastic and ways of discarding them.

There are certain methods of waste disposal as of now which includes land filling, incineration, recycling and bio-degradation. By adopting such as land filling, it leads to all plastics can be disposed in landfills. However, in order to do land filling properly, there's a requirement of a vast amount of space. Subsequently, the chemical constituents and energy contained in plastic is lost in this disposal route which further poses a threat to the environment. If plastics decompose in landfills they hold the risk of leaking into the soil as well. In the case of plastic incineration it tends to cause a negative environment and adverse health effects as hazardous substances may be released into the atmosphere during the exercise of this method.

Thus, plastic recycling methods are of the most prominent ways to solve this issue.
