At the ends of the molecule are CH3groups; along the chain are CH2 and CH groups, and there may even be an occasional carbon atom that carries no hydrogen atoms at all and isattached to four other carbon atoms. Acarbon atom attached to only one other carbon atom, as in the methyl groups, is called a primary carbon.
