Our ancestors could know the approximate time of the day by just looking at the shadow, and this was done by digging a stick in the ground and measuring its shadow with fingers.

Some advanced civilizations, like India, created sundial to make an estimate of the time with the help of sunlight.

Another way to tell the time was standing out in the sun on a clear spot and measuring the length of the shadow. The shadow would be longer in the beginning and end of the day, and shorter toward the middle.
