Article 20 comes under Part III (Fundamental Rights) of the constitution, and is categorized under ‘Right to freedom’.

It provides three protections in case of convictions in certain cases.

Protection from Ex post facto legislation: It means that state cannot make a law and give it retrospective effect. You will be charged of a crime and amount of punishment will be meted out to you only according to the law in force at the time of commission of the crime.
Protection from Double jeopardy: It means that you cannot be prosecuted and convicted of a crime more than once.
Protection from Self-incrimination: It means that you cannot be forced to provide any statement or evidence that may put you in danger of being charged of a crime.
These protections are available not only to citizens but also to foreigners and corporations. Further, these protections are available only in case of criminal proceedings, they are not applicable in case of civil and tax related proceedings.
