As a Microbiologist working on a bioremediation project, you are torn between 2 choices for remediation of soil contaminated with jet fuel. Your first option is to fertilize the soil with nitrogen and phosphorus for possible promotion of growth hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms. For your second option, there is a possibility of using a new commercial microbial inoculum containing hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms, nutrients and surfactants. What information will you need to decide on the best approach?

Deciding factors for the problem are given below-

One must first find out the microbial communities present at the site. Then only one can decide, whether the site requires exotic hydrocarbon degrading microbes or nutrients to boost proliferation of existing ones.

Microbial remediation refers to use of micro organisms for the process of degrading pollutants present in environment.

Various techniques like bioventing, biosparging, biostimulation are available for the first option. Introduction of new species with suitable nutrients too is the method used for remediation.
