Amazon and Ganga, both are very important rivers in Brazil and India respectively. Both are the longest rivers in their respective countries.
Explanation:
☆ AMAZON:
1. The basin of Amazon river is thickly forested and the density of population here is low.
2. The Amazon rainforest is unfit for human settlements and the number of industries are limited here.
3. As a result, the level of pollution in Amazon is low and does not have much impact on human life.
☆ GANGA:
1. River Ganga has fertile basins on both banks and the river basins are densely populated.
2. Agriculture is the main occupation here and most of people living near Ganga practice agriculture. Mainly food and cash crops are grown here.
3. Many agro-based and other industries are located here due to easy accessibility of raw materials.
4. This leads to increased pollution due to fertilisers, pesticides and industrial waste in river water.
5. Many local people also dump sanitary, medical and household waste (peels of fruits, empty packets of food items etc.) in the river.
6. Many people keep lanterns on leaf with flowers on surface of river water as a ritual but they do not know the ill-effects of this on wildlife.
7. This causes pollution of Ganga. This water is used by many people for many domestic purposes like drinking, bathing, cooking and washing.
8. This polluted water causes diseases like diarrhoea and jaundice. This is a major problem in India.
9. Thus as compared to Amazon, pollution in River Ganga will affect human life more greatly.
The government has started the GAP (Ganga Action Plan- Namami Gange) to control pollution in Ganga.
