Ashoka, no doubt, on of the greatest king of ancient India conquered innumerable small kingdoms to extend his empire to Afghanistan in the west and almost all the way down to the south. In fact, no other king in the history would be able to achieve such a remarkable feat again. Even the Guptas, the Mughals and the Marathas failed to get to where he did, but it has to be considered that the time and situation in the later stages were vastly different.
One thing for sure is that Ashoka was a great conqueror. There isn't any suspicion about it. He was ruthless, thirsty for victory and cruel as is evident from his Kalinga conquest. But in the end this mass butchery led to change of his heart, a famous incident in the Indian history and thus began a different era under him.
