Autobiography of river Ganga:
Ganges is India's major river and northern India's largest. In India the Hindu people in particular regard the river as an incarnation of sacredness. Many books have been written on the river in English and other Indian languages that discuss cultural, geographical, and other aspects. I'm known to the whole word as the holy Indian River, but I wasn't at least a river in the beginning. Yes, I was a woman–tall, beautiful, vivacious, shockingly vain, and, if I may add, coquettish. Sure, I had another talent–my touch was sweet, it could purify all it fell on. But I have never been the kind to dedicate myself to a holy and lonely life in order to tell you the truth. Rather, I enjoyed the little pleasures of life–fun, laughter, flirtation, men's company. One day the Sages approached my father, the ruler of the Heavenly Kingdom. He besought me to send me down on the earth, because the demons had so devastated the earth that my touch could be the only thing that could save it. I protested the decision of my father to send me away, then again in vain.
So when in a torrential decline I was sent to earth, leaving my admirers behind numerous, I became so furious and filled with defiance that I was able to sweep my turbulent waves away from this world. Lord Shiva then discerned my evil intentions and trapped me in his long, wind, black tresses. He held me locked until little by little, he let me down into a river called Ganga, cascading through waterfalls, brooks and rivers, with my head in the mystical ice of the Himalayas and my feet floating across the rippling waves of the Bay of Bengal. Since then, I lay a river in shape, a female at heart, the witness of an entire civilization, in a privileged way.
All started with a single raindrop. The first drop of rain on the crater of the mountains. As the rain continued to fall, the water dropped on the side of the mighty mountain from the depression. It filled a long crack in the vicinity, a crack which seemed to be running throughout the mountain. The water followed the crack, winded and bathed at full speed. It's been born a river. Since I'm in a bottle, it must look far-fetched. I have to admit, however, that I was this river. Anyway, some of me. How have I got into a flask? How did you find my way to someone as ancient as me? Let me tell a story to you. Continuing from where we left off, I gushed down the cracked pathway, it somehow seemed endless. As I flowed through hills, plains, plateaus I looked around, the animals, the monstrous creatures; towering lizards and beasts. Anywhere, as they were hiding, was no sign of man. I often went to the riverbank to see those beasts drink my water. Then I realized I embraced life which relied upon me for survival. I felt closer to home, instead of feeling homesick, as I was gushing further and further from the mountain.
I didn't understand that at that time, but it felt like I was going home. I have traveled the country, seen, watched life prosper. Where was the way for me? Sooner than expected, I received the response. I've seen a larger, modest water body ahead of me. It felt like home. It felt like home. That's the ocean, my best friend. This welcomed me as I entered the ocean, got into it, and I was happy I had arrived. It was like a fateful gathering. But, as soon as I began to float, my stay was short. Evaporation took over and I went up into the sky higher and higher. It was the beginning of an eternal cycle and I formed a rain-cloud, I blew to the North wind to the mountain. You may find this is boring, constantly doing the same routine. But that's not because I see something new every time. Such giant creatures I've seen birth. I've seen development there. And I've been seeing their death. All that day appeared boring, as though the world itself knew what was happening. Then, a big fireball came down from the sky and it destroyed animals, plants, and everything including the land.
