It is because they break down the complex inorganic molecules present in dead organims into simple organic molecule which can return to the soil. Since they exhibit this quality. They are called decomposers.

Bacteria and fungi are called decomposers because it breakdown the biodegradable material in inorganic substances.and also helps to clean our environmental areas.
