A banyan, likewise spelled "banian", is a fig that starts its life as an epiphyte, for example a plant that develops on another plant, when its seed grows in a break or cleft of a host tree or structure.
One of the biggest trees, the Great Banyan is found in Kolkata, India.
It is said to be over 250 years of age.
Another such tree, Dodda Aalada Mara as in "Huge Banyan Tree", is found in the edges of Bangalore, India; it has a spread of around 2.5 sections of land.
