hello!
given extract explains about the outer surface i.e. epidermis of the tree
- in roots epidermal cells are provided with root hairs in order to absorb water and minerals from soil.
- whereas in young stems its different that the epidermal cells are meant for performing photosynthesis by lenticels.
- in plants that grow in arid conditions the epidermis is thick and contains a waxy layer inorder to avoid transpiration and save water
- as the tree grows older many layers get deposited over stem.this makes the green stem turn to brown colour.
- the brown coloured part on the stem/branch is known as bark which is made by dead tissue i.e. schlerenchyma
here they have asked one question also.....
- yes, outer layer of tree is different from outer layer of young stem. young stem is green in colour and can perform photosynthesis with lenticels and branch cannot do this
hope this helps you

epithelial cells are the cells of roots whose common function is to absorb the water , so it that's why it has long hair parts . as the plant grow older these outer protective tissue goes under change, a strip of meristem tissue replaces the epidermis of the stem . cells on outside cut off ,and this form a thick layer of cork , which are the dead cells and compactly arranged without intercellular space , they also contains a chemical which is suberine in their walls which doesn't allow them to pass the water and gas
