Because of mercury when it thermometer gets hot the liquid(expands) and when it gets colder compacts and move downwards?,

My dear friend , 
                       
                        You said correct . Mercury is present in thermometer. Thermometer absorbs the heat present in our body when you put it in your armpit and due to that heat , Mercury expands shows rise .Mercury also contracts due to cold.
Not only mercury , Every object in the universe expands and contracts at different temperature.For example if you take Mercury and hydrogen ,  Hydrogen expands 4 times greater than mercury at certain temperature.

That is why Mercury is selected to use in thermometer because it shows somewhat acurate results other than using any other liquids and gases.

Note(Interesting fact) - Gases expand more than Liquids and solids.
