QUESTION: What do religious people think of dishonesty?

ꕥQur'an 3:54—And they (the unbelievers) planned to deceive, and Allah planned to deceive (the unbelievers), and Allah is the best of deceivers.

ꕥQur'an 7:99—Are they then safe from Allah's deception? No one feels safe from Allah's deception except those that shall perish.

ꕥQur'an 8:30—And (remember) when the unbelievers plotted deception against you (O Muhammad), to imprison you, or kill you, or expel you. They plotted deception, but Allah also plotted deception; and Allah is the best of deceivers.

ꕥEven religious people are dishonest. The difference is some ‘religious’ people feel bad about it and ask God for forgiveness. Because being dishonest is a sin and committing it is being a person with such negative qualities: cheating,
lying, deceit, back stabbing etc.

ꕥA religious person or a person of faith helps them to be people of piety, truthfulness, faithfulness, sincerity and love, etc. As a Muslim myself, I can only say from an Islamic perspective what is said on this. Honesty is encouraged and should be the right thing to be done, at the right time and in the
right way.

ꕥThe thing with asking this type of question is its not so much what ‘religious’ people think about so and so. Because religious people have to first acknowledge that dishonesty is a bad thing. They believe in God, so committing it won't help them in the long term - in this life or in the next. Someone who believes in God only wants to do things ‘acts of worship’ that will please God and help them attain jannah (paradise).
It states in various places in the Qur'an about dishonesty such as: chapter 9 verse 119

ꕥYa ayyuha allatheena amanoo ittaqoo Allaha wakoonoo maAAa alssadiqeena
‘O ye who believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are true (in word and deed).’
It's like the more times you commit such sins it'll affect your heart. You won't feel bad about doing it as you've become accustomed to it after committing it so many times. For example having extra marital affairs, stealing money from your family or parents, gossiping about someone etc… these things we all commit and sometimes we do it so many times that we don't feel bad about it.

So the verse explains be with people who are pious, honest, sincere so that it will save your from calamity, and it will make a way out for you and the problems.
