Benzyl alcohol can be converted to benzoic acid by using Oxidizing agent such as KMnO_4,K_2Cr_2O_7.

Explanation:

  • Benzyl alcohol is aromatic alcohol in which -CH_2OH attached to benzene ring and Benzoic acid is aromatic carboxylic acid in which-COOH group attached to benzene ring.
  • For conversion, we have to convert  CH_2OH  to COOH  functional group. We can use Potassium permanganate ( KMnO_4) or Potassium dichromate (K_2Cr_2O_7) in acidic medium to oxidize the alcoholic group.
  • There are many ways to convert benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid. We can use MnO_2 in presence CH_2Cl_2 to convert benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and then using oxidizing agent we get benzoic acid.
