Between ‘shifting cultivation’ and ‘sedentary cultivation’, which system of cultivation do you suggest in areas having degraded soil? Justify your answer.

Shifting cultivation would be referred instead of sedentary cultivation because, Shifting cultivation will enhance soil fertility over a certain time period.

Shifting cultivation

Explanation:

  • The shifting cultivation is a process by which the a small area of land is used for the purpose of growth of new crops. This is used for the purpose of agriculture for short period of time. But after harvest the land is left abandon so that the land regain it's soil nutrient content.
  • Sedentary farming is a process of agriculture in which the same land is used for agriculture produce every year. This is likely to affect the soil fertility as on regular farming the soil may loose it's nutrient content.
  • For the degraded soil the shifting cultivation is a correct option as this will help in retaining the nutrient content of the soil.
