Introduction:

This story is among the famous stories written by Rabindranath Tagore. I have read this story in the  book ‘Sahitya ke Vividh Rang’ which has compiled many good stories.

Plot summary:

Set in the backdrop of Calcutta, the main character of this story is a 5-year-old-girl, Mini and a Kabul based dry-fruit seller man, Kabuliwala. Mini is a sweet and talkative girl who love her Babuji (He is the narrator of this story). Every day in their locality a Kabul based man, Rahmat comes to sell the dry-fruits. The little Mini first get afraid because of the huge bag and robe but slowly she turns to be his friend.During all these, Kabuliwala get arrested for the murder and sentenced to the jail for many years. After many years, Kabuliwala comes to meet the mini who is now the bride. Does Mini recognize him? What is the reason the Kabuliwala comes to meet her after so many years? Read this book to know the heart drenching reality.

Writing style:

The writer has drawn the mischievousness of Mini, attire of the Kabuliwala and their friendship perfectly. You will find yourself connected with the story till the end.

My perception:

The master storyteller Rabindranath Tagore has tried to show the hidden pain from the character of Mini and Kabuliwala. This story is heart wrenching and beautiful, you need to read this.

Movie based on this story:

  • The movie ‘Kabuliwala’ made by Hemin Gupta in the year 1961.
  • The part ‘Kabuliwala’ from the Anuraag Basu made ‘Stories by Ravindranath Tagore’.
