Elizabeth Allen returns to Whyteleafe School, determined to be the best behaved, rather than the naughtiest girl in the school. But new people and events become the obstacles in her path to becoming a completely reformed child. The new boy in her class, Robert Jones, is sullen, bad-tempered and a bully, whilst Kathleen Peters is argumentative, sulky and selfish. When one of the girls mimics Kathleen arguing with their French teacher, Kathleen wages war on the whole of the first form by playing spiteful tricks on various girls, and gets Elizabeth into a spot of trouble with her teacher. Robert is accused of these tricks and is wrongly punished by his class.
