CWMB stands for carvery water management board.

Formation of cwmb is an alarming issue among the southern states of India.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are the two states sharing the major amount of water flowing in carvery.

The origin is at Karnataka and the major flow is through Tamil Nadu.

The dispute is because of sharing the water.

Setting a board like cwmb will sort out the issue among the states.

CWMB and CWRC stands for 'Cauvery Water Management Board' (CWMB) and the 'Cauvery Water Regulation Committee' (CWRC) respectively

EXPLANATION:

  • The sharing of waters of the 'Cauvery River' has been the source of a grim conflict between the 2 states of 'Karnataka and Tamil Nadu'. To deal with this problem a 'Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal' (CWDT) was set up by the Indian govt. on the direction of the Supreme Court, so as to decide the sharing of water between the states and refer all disputes to it. Time to time modifications and interim orders have been passed by the CWDT related to the sharing of Cauvery water.
  • However, on 16th Feb 2018, the Supreme Court pronounced its final verdict where Karnataka was ordered to release 177 tmc of water to Tamil Nadu for the next fifteen years. The verdict also mandated to formally constitute the CWMB by the union govt. within 40 days for executing sternly the CWDT’s award and the Supreme Court’s verdict. Following this verdict, Tamil Nadu has been pressing the Centre to institute the CWMB.
  • The Water Resources Ministry directed that the CWMB would play a key role in sharing of the water amongst the states. Having its headquarters in Delhi, the CWMB would be the sole body to execute the CWDT award as per the Supreme Court’s verdict. The CWMB would be assisted in the discharge of its roles by a 'Cauvery Water Regulation Committee' (CWRC). The role of the management board and regulation committee is to ensure both the states, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka receive their due share of water from the interstate river.
