Topi Shukla is the main character in the story 'Topi Shukla' written by Rahi Masum Raza. Toopi befriends Iffan, the son of Collector who stays in neighborhood. Both of them become very close and Topi likes going to Iffan's house and spending time with his grandmother who too loved him a lot. Topi's grandmother doesn't approve of his friendship with a Muslim boy and often he gets scolded to one thing or the other. Once he called his mom 'Ammi' and the grandmother was angry about his using such words. Nor she liked Topi's mom talking to him in Purabi. (His mom was also from the purab like Iffan's granny.) Topi feels bad about her behavior and wants to swap his grandmother with Iffan's grandmother. But Iffan tells him that his grandmother has told him the old people die. When Iffan's grandmother dies, he feels the loss and he misses her presence in the house when he goes there. Iffan's father is transferred to another place and Topi vows not to befriend any boy in future whose father has a transferable job. Topi can't befriend any of the new Collector's sons when the next collector comes and he feels lonely. At home also he is treated not so well and can't study well, as a result he fails in class tenth. Next year, he gets typhoid and fails again. The next year he resolves to pass and though his father fights elections and there is lot of distraction, he passes in the third division.
