Photosynthesis takes in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and converts it into oxygen and other organic products (like sugars).
Respiration takes in oxygen from the atmosphere and sugar to provide energy for an organism which releases carbon dioxide as a bi-product into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide can either go to plants for them to undergo photosynthesis or the carbon dioxide can dissolve into the ocean which eventually can form sediments in the ocean.
