The unification process of Germany started many years ago during the Battle of Nations. Many of the states of Germany joined with Russia, Sweden, Austria to defeat Napolean's army. When the Napoleanic wars ended, Austria was the most powerful German state politically, in the 'Peace Of Vienna' in 1815. Prussia was Austria's political and diplomatic rival then.
There were many problems facing the unification of Germany. Some feared that unification would give too much power in the hands of Austria and Prussia. There were also problems while deciding on how much tax to be paid and who would collect it. In spite of all this, the unification did take place in Versailles on 18th January, 1871, at the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian war and at the proclamation of the German princes
