British vision of India had no single coherent set of ideas. On the contrary it was full of contradictions and inconsistencies. Their rule was based on opportunism. This was seen in the various political, economic, social and cultural policies adopted by them. Different Governor Generals adopted different policies for instance Lord Wellesley's Subsidiary Alliance system and Lord Dalhousie's Doctrine of Lapse. Sometimes they supported the Hindus and  supported the Muslims another time. They adopted suspicious policies towards the princely states.

The British reaction during the National Movement was also opportunistic. In the Round Table Conferences the Britishers adopted a hard or soft attitude towards the Congress or the Muslim League depending on the situations. Thus their goal was to rule India by manipulating different situations.
