Sodium and potassium metals react violently with cold water.

Observations :

1. Metal starts moving over the surface of the water making a hissing sound.

2. Metal starts reacting with water causing little explosion

3. Soon the metal catches fire and starts burning.

The gas evolved during the reaction can be identified bringing a burning candle near it. The candle burns with a pop sound indicating the evolution of hydrogen gas.
