dipole moment is the product of the magnitude of positive and negative charge and the distance between them.

CO2 is symmetrical molecule and has zero dipole moment. Thus having linear shape.whereas H2O is  an unsymmetrical molecule and geometrics have specific dipole moment. Thus having bent shape .

therefore CO2 and H2O being triatomic have different shape.
