I don't think it is possible to separate them by addition of water as both are soluble in water. Common salt is highly soluble, while sugar is not as soluble as common salt, yet quite soluble. Recrystallization of the resultant solution will provide crystals with impurities. One of the ways to separate such a mixture is by the use of an organic solvent, like acetone, benzene or Petroleum ether, in which common salt will be insoluble.
