it means that u learn from ur mistakes and same a teacher does......a teacher helps u to achieve ur goal and corrects ur mistakes and the same our past mistakes do...as after committing mistakes we dont commit them again....and thus accomplish our goal

He want to say that  try to learn from your last mistake and try not to repeat it again. To err is human but one can avoid to repeat the same by learning from their past experience as self experience is the best one.

                                              OR

You need to learn from past experiences and improve yourself everyday.
