Here it is told that during the onset of winter monsoon an area of high pressure is created on the Indian landmass and there is low pressure on the surrounding waters so the winds mowe from land to sea and the monsoon season is over this is known as retrearting monsoon and on the diagram on the right its vice versa

✔NORTH EAST MONSOON:-

⚫the first picture indicates retreating monsoon as well as north east monsoon.
⚫the Southwest monsoon starts with retreating from Northern India in early October.
at this time , temperature in the interiors ie continents is low , which means high pressure.
⚫and the temperature of nearby oceans is comparatively high , which means low pressure.
⚫hence, winds move from high pressure area to low pressure area ie from land to sea.
⚫these winds are offshore winds ie they move from land so they dont contain any moisture.
⚫these are north east monsoon winds.
only when they blow over bay of bengal , they collect a little moisture and cause rain in Coromandel coast in tamilnadu.
➡NOTE:- kerala is the first place to experience retreating monsoon and also last to experience its withdrawal.

✔SOUTH WEST MONSOON:-

⚫the second picture indicates south west monsoon.
⚫this is the complete opposite of north east monsoon.
⚫at this time , temperature in the interiors ie continents is high , which means low pressure.
and the temperature of nearby oceans is comparatively low , which means high pressure.
⚫hence, winds move from high pressure area to low pressure area ie from sea to land.
⚫these winds are onshore winds ie they move from sea, so they contain lot of moisture and do heavy rainfall in interiors of india.
⚫this is known as South west monsoon.
