महादेव देसाई गुजराती, बंगाली और अंग्रेजी के साथ एक उत्कृष्ट लेखक थे। उन्हें गुजराती में एक अनुवादक और लेखक के रूप में बहुत माना जाता है। उन्होंने संत फ्रांसिस (1934), वीर वल्लभभाई (1928) और बीयू खुद्सी खिदमतगार जैसी कई आत्मकथाएँ लिखीं, जो खान अब्दुल गफ्फार खान और उनके भाई की जीवनी थी। बंगाली से, महादेव देसाई ने शरतचंद्र चट्टोपाध्याय (1923) की लघु कथाओं, उपन्यास विराजवाहु (1924) और टैगोर की कुछ कविताओं का गुजराती में अनुवाद किया। उन्होंने 1936 में अंग्रेजी, नेहरू की आत्मकथा से गुजराती में भी अनुवाद किया। [7] गांधी की आत्मकथा, द स्टोरी ऑफ माय एक्सपेरिमेंट्स विद ट्रुथ का अंग्रेजी अनुवाद, इसके गुजराती मूल से भी देसाई द्वारा किया गया था। गांधी के प्रकाशन यंग इंडिया, नवजीवन और हरिजनबंधु में भी उनका नियमित योगदान था। महादेव देसाई की डायरियों का 19 मात्रा प्रकाशन महादेववाहिनी दयारी है। नरहरी पारिख और चंदूभाई भागुभाई द्वारा संपादित, ये गांधी के जीवन पर एक करीबी दृष्टि प्रदान करते हैं और गांधी के जीवन और भारत के स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन की प्रमुख घटनाओं के एक महत्वपूर्ण केंद्र है l देसाई अखिल भारतीय समाचार पत्र संपादकों के सम्मेलन के संस्थापक सदस्यों में से थे। उन्होंने विभिन्न राष्ट्रवादी भारतीय समाचार पत्रों जैसे फ्री प्रेस, बॉम्बे क्रॉनिकल, हिंदुस्तान टाइम्स, द हिंदू और अमृता बाज़ार पत्रिका में भी अक्सर योगदान दिया।

Mahadev Desai : Mahatma’s shadow

August 15, celebrated as the Independence Day, also happens to be the death anniversary of Mahadevbhai Desai, who was Mahatma Gandhi’s private secretary and chronicler of his day-to-day life for 25 years.

Mahadevbhai died on August 15, 1942 in Aga Khan palace, Pune, where he along with Gandhiji, Kasturba, Sushila Nayar and Miraben were kept under detention following the ‘Quit India’ ultimatum to the British. The ominous possibility of Gandhiji embarking on a fast-unto-death had weighed heavily on the mind of Mahadevbhai, which, according to Dr Sushila Nayar, might have led to hypertension and caused the cardiac arrest.

Mahadevbhai was more than a shadow to Mahatma Gandhi who had described him as his heir within a few years of the former joining him as his secretary. Mahadevbhai, the son of a poor primary school teacher, joined Gandhiji in November 1917 at the age of 25 and remained with him till his untimely death in 1942. He was only 50 at the time.
