Solution

Here,

X has 8 protons, 8 neutrons and 8 electrons

Y has 8 protons, 9 neutrons and 8 electrons

So, atomic number of X = atomic number of Y = 8

But, mass number of X = 8 + 8 = 16 (protons + neutrons)

and mass number of Y = 8 + 9 = 17

Recall that elements having same atomic number but different masses are called isotopes.

Hence, X and Y are isotope of each other.
