Can strings change spacetime topology?

Very interesting question and the answer is yes, at least instring theory. In general relativity, spacetime can be curved but can never be torn, because in GR, topology ofspacetime can't change, only geometry can change. ... Then came "string theory" as a quantum theory of gravity.
