Rivers and streams connect with each other in a system called a watershed. ... The rivers and streams in a closed watershed empty into an inland body of water like a lake. Open watersheds empty into the ocean from one source.

The goverment of India has planned to interlink the rivers of the Himalyan system which are perennial in nature to those of the seasonal river system in peninsular India.

However, the project might have acute impact on environment, submerging forests, disturbing the wildlife and so on.

Since the rivers have been continuously changing their courses, like the Tista, for example, the feasibilty of such a solution for controlling floods might not be applicable in the long run.
