Carbon Disulphide CS2, can be made from by-product SO2.The Overall reaction is 5C+2SO2--->CS2+4CO.How much CS2 can be produced from 440 Kg of waste SO2 with 60Kg of coke if the SO2 conversion is 80%?

Answer:

The molar mass of SO2 is - 32 + 2(16) = 64 g/mol.

The molar mass of CS2 is - 12 + 2(32) = 76 g/mol.

2 moles of SO2 form one moles of CS2.

2 × 64 = 128 g of SO2 forms 76g of CS2.

Hence, 450 g of SO2 will form -

(76/128)(450)

= 267 kg of CS2.

However, the conversion is only 82 %.

Hence,(82/100)(267) = 210 kg of CS2 will be formed.
