Carbon atom has four electrons in its valence or outermost shell so it mainly formed covalent compounds because it can not loss or gain electron completely to complete its outermost shell like ionic compounds due to high amount of energy is required to add four electrons. Example are Methane (CH4), carbondioxode (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), ethane (C2H6), propane (C3H8), pentane (C5H12) and butane (C4H10) etc.
