Sentences in indirect speech are as follows-

1. Rina said that she had seen the film the day before.

2. Linda said that she would visit Bali the next day.

3. Anita asked me if I had sent the letter to my parents the day before.

4. Hadi asked Mirna if she had joined the meeting the day before.

5. Tuti asked Rio whether his mother was having breakfast then.

  • Indirect speech is reporting the content of someone else utterance without directly quoting it.
  • To change a sentence from direct speech to indirect speech following rules are followed.
  1. Indirect speech always ends with a full stop.
  2. All the quotation marks are removed.
  3. If the reporting verb is in the past tense, the verb inside quotation marks is also changed to past tense in indirect speech.
  4. The place or time specified in the direct speech is changed appropriately to match the present position or time.
  5. For example- Now changes to Then, yesterday changes to the day before, and tomorrow is changed to 'the next day'.
  6. When the speaker and reporter are the same, the first person pronoun is used
  7. If the reporter and speaker are different then the reporter's pronoun should be in third person, and the speaker's pronoun should be in the first person.
